Marketing Designer

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, includes a mandatory thirty-minute meal break
Location: North Adams, MA – All staff is currently working remotely for the remainder of 2020. We will consider full-time remote/hybrid working options if necessary.

Position Purpose

The Marketing Designer will work closely with the Marketing Art Director to develop Storey’s marketing materials in both digital and print. Annual projects encompass book-specific digital marketing campaigns, including social media, two seasonal catalogs, and a wide range of other promotional materials for both publicity and sales. This position requires an enthusiastic attitude and ability to both design independently and work collaboratively with all departments at Storey. Strong organizational skills, along with stellar design talent, and an unflappable nature are the desired combination for this position. An interest in our published categories is a plus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Develop concepts for, design, and produce the following:

  • Digital assets: social media campaigns, advertisements including animated gif’s and other dynamic web projects, newsletter art, formatted email blasts, web buttons and a variety of other online promotions
  • Printed pieces: specialty catalogs, backlist and order forms for our seasonal catalog, BLADs, posters, postcards, sellsheets, and advertisements
  • Point-of-purchase displays: both floor and table-top
  • Specialty promotional materials: such as tote bags, tags, and stickers

Work collaboratively with other departments:

  • With Publicity to design posters, postcards, and advertisements supporting authors, events and new titles
  • With Sales to design sellsheets, promotional mailers, posters and advertisements for different market needs
  • With Editorial for content
  • With Design for pages/photography/illustrations/online content

Production & Administrative responsibilities include:

  • Work directly with printers: obtaining quotes, prepress setup, monitor printing and delivery of
    marketing materials
  • Prepare purchase orders
  • Source vendors
  • Create dummy books and other 3-D packaging (requires hands-on assembly skills, attention to detail, and use of precise cutting tools and spray-mount)
  • Process existing covers, book pages, art, author photos and other graphics for digital outreach, sales presentations, publicity requests, and social media posts

Education/Skill Requirements

  • College degree. Graphic design major preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience within the marketing field of design (Working knowledge in marketing through social media channels a plus)
  • Knowledge of the design process for both print and web
  • Experience in a Macintosh environment and fluency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop as well as a working knowledge of Illustrator and Microsoft Office
  • An interest in Storey’s DIY publishing focus
  • Candidate should possess strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. S/he must be able to prioritize while managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to collaborate closely and brainstorm fresh ideas
  • Knowledge of video and photo production preferred but not essential

Physical Demands

  • Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing and creating designs using a computer terminal; viewing art work; visually inspecting fine design elements; cannot be color blind.
  • Must be able to move from one point to another
  • Must be able to stand, bend, lift and stoop
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to sit or stand in one location for extended periods of time
  • Must have keen hand-eye coordination, able to use an Xacto blade and other precise design tools

Marketing Communications Manager

Basic Function

Storey Publishing, a dynamic nonfiction publisher located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is seeking an experienced marketing professional. The person in this role will curate and shape Storey’s public voice for marketing and publicity, help develop a comprehensive digital strategy for connecting with our readers, and communicate clear and distinctive positioning for each book and for the company’s publishing program and corporate identity.

The Marketing Communications Manager is the key copywriter and content editor for all marketing materials, including website, consumer newsletter, catalogs, advertising, tipsheets and related sales materials, and press releases. With expertise in content and channel optimization, brand consistency, analytics, and measurement, this position works in partnership with public relations and marketing staff to envision and implement creative, informed strategies for boosting the reach and sales effectiveness of Storey’s marketing.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with publicity and marketing team to drive discoverability and effectively market Storey titles.
  • Ensure all content is on-brand, consistent in terms of style, quality, and tone of voice, and optimized for search and user experience for all channels of content including online, social media, email, point of purchase, mobile, video, print and in-person.
  • Map out a content strategy that supports and extends marketing initiatives, both short- and long-term, determining which methods work for the brand and why. Ability to respond quickly to market changes and continuously refine an evolving strategy is a must.
  • Manage market data analysis and evaluation. Conduct ongoing tests to gauge content effectiveness. Gather data, analyze and make recommendations based on those results.
  • Consult and offer guidance on Storey’s content and strategies for all digital outreach.
  • Develop content strategy and a content calendar for Storey website and newsletters.  Create and ensure a robust program of online feature articles and newsletters including the monthly Fresh Picks ebook promotion. Write, edit, and produce content; be the arbiter of best practices in grammar, messaging, writing, and style.
  • Write marketing copy for tipsheets and catalog for frontlist books, working in collaboration with the Publisher, Associate Publisher, and editors
  • Write consumer-focused book descriptions for Firebrand database drawing on SEO and keyword best practices.
  • Write copy for sales and marketing pieces, including BLADS, sell sheets, and A+ pages.
  • Write copy for downloadable components for website, including activity kits.
  • Edit and proofreads marketing materials, press releases, and other promotional copy including website landing pages and sweepstake pages.
  • Work with in-house team to envision, script, and shape video content for digital promotions.
  • Oversee and manages the copywriting process for back covers and Other Storey Titles pages of all books. Write back cover copy for selected titles.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • B.A. or B.S. in Marketing, Journalism or relevant field
  • Experience with consumer marketing and copywriting
  • Proficient in Google analytics, keywords, and SEO
  • Experience with common web Content Management Systems like WordPress
  • A comfortable working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and SCSS
  • Passion for digital marketing in the DIY topics including crafting, cooking, gardening, and homesteading
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative setting; a collaborative mindset and ability to work with multiple departments
  • Excellent organizational skills, both personal organization and the organization of information
  • Active involvement with a wide range of online DIY communities and creative ideas for engaging with these communities on Storey’s behalf
  • Knowledge of book publishing industry a plus
