Foundation single crochet (FSC) appears in several of the projects in Crochet One-Skein Wonders® for Babies and it works well when a crochet project requires a firm but elastic edge. It’s an especially useful technique when doing a long cast-on because it combines your foundation chain with your first row of stitches in a single step.
