The mission of Storey Publishing is to serve our customers by publishing practical information that encourages personal independence in harmony with the environment.
We seek to do this in a positive atmosphere that promotes editorial quality, team spirit, and profitability. The books we select to carry out this mission include titles for adults and children on gardening, home reference, crafts, cooking, beer & wine, nature, animals, horses, building, farming, homesteading, and mind/body/spirit.
We are always pleased to review new proposals directly from authors and from agents. We offer standard royalty contracts. If you have an idea for a book on any of the subjects in our line, and if you are intrigued by the philosophy expressed on our mission statement, we hope you will think of Storey Publishing.
Please include the following information:
A letter of introduction.
A one-paragraph description of your book idea. What is the “hook” for your book? Why is it unique? Examples: “Sooner or later, every homeowner finds him-or herself confronted with an overgrown or injured tree and shrub that needs attention. Having this compact, comprehensive, and easy-to-follow book at hand, is like having a master arborist at your shoulder.” (The Pruning Answer Book). “With the growing interest among urban and suburban dwellers in raising backyard chickens as part of a sustainable lifestyle, the chicken coop is being elevated from a purely functional, barnyard structure to an architectural element in the yard or garden. Here’s the DIY book for the urban chickenkeeper for whom style is just as important as function.” (Reinventing the Chicken Coop).
A brief statement explaining why you think your book is needed and describing the potential readers of the book. Answer the question, “Who will buy this book and why?”
A list of recent books (if any) similar to your own, with a thorough explanation of how yours will be different. List competitive books published within the last three years. Include title, author, page count, retail price, publisher, and content/format summary for each book.
A paragraph about yourself and your credentials for writing the book you are proposing (you may also wish to include your resume), as well as any media clips/articles/video about you or other evidence of your ability to promote your book.
A table of contents, including a brief description of each chapter.
Your thoughts about the length, format, photographic and illustrative requirements, suggested packaging, and general appearance of the book.
A sample of your writing from previous books or magazines.
A sample chapter from the proposed book.
We do not accept fiction (including fictional children’s picture books), poetry, or autobiographies – please familiarize yourself with our catalog before submitting your proposal.
Due to the number of submissions we receive, it may take several months for us to respond to your query letter. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
