Account Manager — Specialty Wholesale Market

Basic Function

Responsible for developing and executing sales strategies that increase the sales of US specialty wholesale accounts for Storey Publishing and Timber Press books. Assist Director of Sales with management of key vendor managed inventory account.

Essential Functions

  • Handle specialty wholesale accounts with an eye towards opening new accounts and growing overall sales.
  • Support Director of Sales with key vendor managed inventory system.
  • Travel to represent Storey Publishing and Timber Press at local and national trade shows is required, weekends and evenings can be required when working a show.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with buyers; understand their business and brainstorm ways to partner with them to promote and merchandise Storey Publishing and Timber Press product.
  • Analyze sales data using internal information systems.
  • Pre-process and confirm all account orders in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and follow up on sample mailings of new books to targeted accounts.
  • Maintain accurate notes and records for each account in our contact database.
  • Prepare mailing lists and letters for targeted campaigns.
  • Special projects as directed.

Skills/Qualifications Required

  • 3–5 years of experience in the book publishing industry.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of sales, marketing, or retail experience including direct selling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and seasoned networking skills.
  • Knowledge of specialty markets.
  • Trade show experience including booking, marketing, signage, stocking, setup, staffing, and teardown.
  • Excellent phone manner.
  • Must be willing and available for travel to trade shows and account visits, including overnight travel.
  • Must be able to work well in a team setting.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Power Point, File Maker.
  • Knowledge of our publishing categories, such as gardening/horticulture, crafts, cooking, and animal care, is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Vision and hearing must be acute enough for phone and computer operations, independent travel, and to setup and staff tradeshow booths.
  • Must be able to perform physical demands of position which include but are not limited to: agility and stamina to stand, sit, walk, stoop and bend routinely and for long periods of time; must be able to lift and move heavy boxes from one point to another (up to 40 pounds).
  • Must be able to independently travel to local and national tradeshows and conferences, this includes travel via car, train and airplane, valid license and vehicle preferred.

Production and Art Coordinator

Position Purpose

Using InDesign (and occasionally legacy file formats), the Production and Art Coordinator makes corrections and minor additions or adjustments to reprints of Storey’s books; prepares print-ready files; and manages the archive of reprint files. This position is also responsible for coordinating file deliveries to other publishers who have purchased rights to our books, in-house staff that need to repurpose files, or other partners with approved access. An additional, key responsibility is managing photo deliveries, so hi-res files are properly named and organized and lo-res copies are processed for use in design layouts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Make corrections and minor updates to backlist books.
  • Prepare and deliver print-ready files.
  • Communicate closely with the production manager responsible for reprints and strictly follow established procedural protocols.
International, Premium, and Co-Editions
  • Coordinate and prepare files for delivery to international clients publishing foreign-language editions of Storey books.
  • Coordinate and prepare files for co-editions, premium, and custom sales.
  • Communicate closely with the manager responsible for these sales to understand the client’s needs and timeline.
  • Locate and deliver files from archived books to in-house staff or publishing partners as needed.
  • Organize and maintain an archive of reprint corrections.
Photo Processing
  • Organize deliveries of high-resolution art from commissioned photographers, stock agencies, and other sources, strictly following established protocols.
  • Create and deliver timely low-resolution copies of photos for use in page layout.
  • Coordinating files for print-on-demand books.
  • Organizing proofs for use as reference on press.
  • Assisting with the manufacture of sales dummies.
  • Taking the initiative to assume responsibility for additional duties as required.

Education/Skill Requirements

  • Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Mac OS.
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
  • Above-average attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Process-oriented and methodical.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate, collaborate, and problem-solve effectively with a variety of people.
  • Ability to represent Storey professionally to external parties, including custom clients, printers, and other vendors.

Physical Demands

  • Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal and visually inspecting fine design elements.
  • Cannot be color blind.
  • Must be able to sit or stand in one location for extended periods of time.
